TaylorMade/adidas Championship Series (TMACS) Exemption Policy

It is our goal to continue to field some of the strongest events in the region and will continue to utilize our TMACS exemption policy to achieve that goal. These exemptions into the Tournament of Champions at The Golf Club of Tennessee are based on your play in the TaylorMade/adidas Championship Series. We feel that with this bonus, our strong fields will get even stronger. Listed below is the layout of how the exemptions will be distributed.

Amount of Exemptions per Division

The allotment for each division will be based on the number of players per division from the previous years Tournament of Champions. We will re-evaluate the number of exemptions given per division at the conclusion of each year. The following table lays out how the exemptions will be determined.

Determination of Exemptions

Selections for the 2009 TMACS exemptions will be based on the player’s adjusted scoring average for TMACS events only. This system has been met with great success over the past couple of years and we are pleased to use it in our selection process.

The tournament courses have been divided into tiers of difficulty. Its difficulty is determined by its course rating which has been established by the Tennessee Golf Association and its Course Rating Teams. Each one of the tiers carries a different weight. The more difficult the course (higher rating), the more weight a score from that course carries. Since each division may be playing on different courses and from a different yardage, each individual division has their own tier structure. The following are the tier structures for 2009:

To determine a player’s adjusted score, first find the tournament course name in the table below. Once you find the course, the rating will be located under the division you are competing in (the course ratings in this chart is preliminary and will be finalized when the Junior Tour Staff set-up the golf course on the tournament days). Compare the tournament course rating with the chart above and determine which tier that course rating falls under. Take that tier number and go to the multiplier chart above to determine which multiplier to use. Finally, multiply your tournament score by the multiplier and you will generate your adjusted score.

To be eligible for one of the exemptions, a player must play in AT LEAST THREE (3) TMACS events. At the end of the season, the player’s TOP TWO (2) TOURNAMENTS will be averaged to determine their TMACS scoring average. Based on those adjusted scoring averages, we will award the exemptions based on the allotment per division as stated in the table above. These exempt players will then have a spot in the Tournament of Champions.

For Example:

Division:

Boys 16-18

Boys 16-18

Boys 16-18

Boys 16-18

Course: Harpeth Hills Harpeth Hills Old Natchez Old Natchez
Rating: 72.3 72.3 72.6 72.6
Tier: VI VI VII VII
Multiplier: .975 .975 .970 .970
Score: 68 73 72 71
Adjusted Score:

.975 X 68 = 66.3

.975 X 73 = 71.175

.970 X 72 = 69.84

.970 X 71 = 68.87

Tournament Avg:  (66.3 + 71.175) / 2 = 68.7375 (69.84 + 68.87) / 2 = 69.355
TMACS Avg: (68.7375 + 69.355) / 2 = 69.05

** If a tie for the last spot in a particular division occurs, the player with the most wins will earn the spot. If there is still a tie, the player with the lowest adjusted tournament will advance. If there is still a tie, the lowest adjusted round from that tournament will be used and so on. If a tie cannot be broken, final spots will be determined by lot.

Tournament of Champions

TaylorMade/adidas Championship Series exemptions may affect the determination of players invited to the Tournament of Champions. As in previous years the number of players per division invited will be based on their division’s percentage of the Masters Division. If the Girls 15-18 Masters Division accounts for 50% of the players in all Masters Divisions combined, they would receive 36 invitations based on a field on 72 players.

Any player, who gains one of the exemptions into the Tournament of Champions, will automatically have an invitation reserved. The remainder of the field will then be determined based on the best remaining T.O.C. overall scoring averages. Invitations will be sent out to the top finishers, who have not earned exemptions, until we have filled the field. The following example will illustrate how we will fill the field.

Boys 16-18
Number of players:
 250
Total # of Masters Division players: 1,000
Percentage of 16-18 Division: 25%
Invitations based on 72 player field: 18 invitations

If the Boys 16-18 division was awarded 18 invitations the field would be set the following way. First the exempt players would be entered into the field; the exempt players are highlighted in red. Since there are three exempt players, there are only fifteen (15) remaining invitations. As stated above the remaining invitees are determined by overall scoring average. The remaining invitations would be given to the top fifteen remaining players (excluding exempt players) and these players are highlighted in blue.
